James C. Ruh
Mr. Ruh graduate with a BBA with honors from the University of Michigan in 1968. After service with the US Army in Vietnam he attended and graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan law school in 1973. He practiced law for over 35 years in Denver, Colorado, although his practice was national in scope. He was also admitted to practice law in California and much of his practice in later years was California based. He has handled a wide variety of complex commercial cases for both plaintiffs and defendants in the areas of securities, antitrust, corporate control, municipal and corporate finance, real estate, commercial torts and commercial and corporate contractual disputes. He also has represented parties in DOJ, SEC and IRS investigations in the municipal finance arena. He has structured workouts for clients involving hundreds of millions of dollars of defaulted municipal bonds, defaulted real estate projects and defaulted corporate debt.
Mr. Ruh has helped both negotiate and structure settlements in scores of lawsuits through the restructuring of business relationships and contractual agreements between parties. Mr. Ruh has been an arbitrator and a mediator with the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) for over 25 years. He has been trained as a mediator through courses offered by the AAA and Pepperdine University Law School. Mr. Ruh has mediated hundreds of cases both as a lawyer for one of the parties and as a mediator.
Mr. Ruh has served on numerous charitable boards over the years. He is past Chair of the Advisory Council for the Hall of Life at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and past Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Ballet. He is currently on the board of the Vail Symposium and is the past chair.
Barbara Ruh
Barbara K. Ruh graduated from Michigan State University as a National Merit Scholar (B. A. with high honors, 1967) and studied law at the University of Michigan, where she was selected for the Law Review, and at the University of Colorado (J.D. magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, 1975). She has practiced law in Colorado since 1975, specializing in estate and tax planning, with an emphasis in real estate and international transfer tax planning. She has represented professional sports figures in tax planning and administered significant estates with complicated international assets and numerous individual and charitable beneficiaries. She was among the first in Colorado to include mandatory mediation clauses in all estate planning documents. She has been trained as a mediator through courses offered at Pepperdine University Law School.
Barbara has also served as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Colorado handling medical malpractice and professional licensing cases, and has been an adjunct instructor at the University of Colorado Law School. She has been a contributing author to the Colorado Estate Planning Handbook and has lectured extensively on estate planning, probate and real estate topics. She is also a licensed real estate broker in Colorado and California.
